Abuse              
Abuse comes in lots of different forms. It is a frightening experience, and some people who are abused are afraid to get help.
Physical Abuse
  • Hitting
  • Slapping
  • Choking
  • Shaking
  • Beating
  • Burning
  • Pinching
  • Throwing
  • Shoving
  • Kicking
  • Whipping
Sexual Abuse

Any sexual act between a minor and an adult is sexual abuse.

Survivors may experience a range of emotions and problems, such as:

  • Anger
  • Guilt
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty in trusting others
  • Difficulties in relationships

  • Flashbacks
  • Memory problems
  • Physical health problems
  • Eating disorders
  • Substance abuse

All of these are normal reactions to an experience that is not normal.

Neglect
  • Abandonment or lack of supervision.
  • Housing or shelter that is not adequate
  • Not providing food
  • Not providing clothing for the season or the weather
  • Denial of medical care
Emotional/Verbal Abuse
  • Yelling, screaming, name-calling
  • Negative comparisons to others
  • Saying someone is "no good, worthless"
  • Failure to provide affection and emotional support
